City of Water Day is a region-wide day of free, family-friendly events on or near the water sponsored by the Waterfront Alliance and NY-NJ Harbor & Estuary Program. Now in its 18th year, this event serves to champion a climate-resilient New York and New Jersey Harbor. In Hoboken, the Fund for a Better Waterfront, Resilience Adventures, the Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse, Ke Aloha Outriggers, Montclair State University New Jersey Center for Water Science and Technology Traveling HAB Lab and the Hudson River Fishermen’s Association will provide a full day of activities.
Schedule of Events
All events are free & open to the public and will take place at Maxwell Place Park (1100 Sinatra Drive North) unless otherwise indicated.
Hudson River Fishermen’s Association & the American Littoral Society
9 am – 1 pm: Fishing clinic for all ages; catch, tag & release at the North Pier in Maxwell Place Park (at 12th Street) – Rods, reel and bait provided
Fund for a Better Waterfront
10 am – 4 pm: Information booth at the Hoboken Cove
Our Tern
9 am – 11 am: Birdwatching from North Pier in Maxwell Place Park (at 12th Street) featuring Hoboken’s colony of terns
Resilience Paddle Sports
11 a.m. Historical kayaking tour with the Hoboken Historical Museum (registration required)
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Environmental Science Activities for all ages on the beach
11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stand-up paddle board lessons (registration required)
Ke Aloha Outrigger
1 pm – 3 pm: River trips in traditional Polynesian canoesNa ‘Ohana o Ke Kai Festival
Hoboken Cove Community Boathouse
9 – 11 am: Public River Trip (reservation required)
11 am – 3 pm: Kayak / SUP in cove
The Montclair State University New Jersey Center for Water Science and Technology
10 am – 4 pm: Visit from the Traveling HAB (Harmful Algae Blooms) Lab with educational materials on water quality, conservation, algal diversity and ecology. Participants will be given the opportunity to examine live algal samples from different ecosystem types using microscopes.
